Extracurricular Activity Survey

The Extracurricular Activity Survey is a self-report instrument, adapted from Peters, et al, (1995), which assesses the child's involvement and satisfaction in after-school activities in the domains of school, community, church, and employment.

Abstract: The Extracurricular Activity is a 100-item questionnaire measuring the child's involvement and satisfaction in after-school activities in the domains of school, community, church, and employment. The measure asks the participant to consider the past 12 months, including the current summer and the past school year. For each category—school, church, community, and employment—participants can list up to five different activities. The participants are asked to estimate the amount of time they have spent per week and number of weeks per year they have spent in each of the activities listed. Using a 5-point scale (1 = not very satisfied to 5 = extremely satisfied), participants are also asked to rate their satisfaction with each activity. No scales are constructed for this measure. However, means including up to 5 items estimating time spent per week and weeks per year, as well as a satisfaction score rating each activity were calculated. The calculated mean followed the algorithm of adding scores for the 5 items and then dividing the sum by the number on non-missing items. For some respondents the mean consisted of scores for 5 items divided by 5, for others a single item divided by 1. Descriptive statistics for these means are reported in the next section. The user is advised to examine the computed means with care. Some are calculated using a single item. The high number of missing values for items used to compute means for the Employment Activity should be noted.
