Parenting
Parenting is a 24-item combination of two measures previously used in the Fast Track project namely, the Being a Parent Scale which is an adaptation of the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (Gibaud-Wallston & Wandersman, 1978), which assesses parenting self-esteem, and the Conflict Tactics Scale (Murray Straus, 1979) used to measure strategies for handling conflicts within the family.
Abstract: Parenting in Wave XIX is a 24-item combination of two measures previously used in the Fast Track project namely, the Being a Parent and the Conflict Tactics Scale. These two instruments are designed to establish the respondent’s parenting skills. This measure, as is, was first added to the Fast Track Protocol in study year 19. The questionnaire establishes, first, the living status of the respondent with up to 5 children. Then the Being A Parent (Gibaud-Wallston et al) questionnaire applies, followed by a selected list of items from the Conflict Tactics Scale measure (Strassberg et al). The 12 items from Being A Parent has a 7 point format from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Six of the items are reversed to construct a scale measuring parenting satisfaction in a logical form. The Conflict Tactics Scale items measure frequency of occurrence of things the respondent might have done to his/her child(ren). Original scales constructed using Conflict Tactics Scale are omitted in this report, since very few selected items of those original scales were actually used in the present instrument. Two scales for the Being A Parent measure were used. The scales for this report were constructed for both the Normative and High-Risk Control samples. These two scale scores were calculated by taking an average of the items comprising the scales. None of the observations were missing 50% or more data. The resulting scales, items that compose them, and internal consistencies (Cronbach’s coefficient Alpha) are provided below. Comparison of means for both scales between high and low risk respondents were found not significant. For scales constructed from the Being a Parent measure, the user is being warned that reliability for Parenting Satisfaction is rather low. Also the user is encouraged to test for associations for variables measuring individual items originally from the Conflict Tactics Scale measure. For these individual variables (Q478 through Q484), the presence of missing values should be noted.
