Seattle Personality Questionnaire – Grade 3+
Abstract: The Seattle Personality Questionnaire-Grade 3+ is a 44-item measure completed by the target child. This measure is designed to determine three dimensions of symptomatology (anxiety, conduct problems, and somatization), depression, school dislike, and a lie scale. The symptomatology and lie items were based on the Seattle Personality Questionnaire for Young School-Aged Children, which is a 50-item self-report personality questionnaire for children ages 6 through 10 (Kusche, Greenberg, and Beilke, 1988). The school dislike items were borrowed from two scales: School Loneliness (Asher, Hymel, & Renshaw, 1984, Asher & Wheeler, 1985) and School Sentiment (Ladd, 1990). In year 4, the responses for all of the items changed to a scale of 0 to 4, with 0=almost never, 1=sometimes true, 2=often true, 3=almost always, and 4=don't know/no response. No other changes were made to the measure in year 4. There are eight subscales for this measure: Anxiety, Conduct Problems, Somatization, Depression, Lying, School Dislike, School Loneliness, and School Sentiment. All of these subscales are based on factor analysis or theoretically derived. Analysts should note that four of the scales were fairly normally distributed for both the control and the normative samples: Anxiety, Somatization, Depression, and Lying. Four scales were positively skewed for both samples: Conduct Problems, School Dislike, School Loneliness, and School Sentiment. In addition, the School Loneliness scale showed a slight positive kurtosis for both the control and the normative samples. 94% of the responses for both samples were between 0.0 and 2.0 (with 5.0 being the highest possible score for this scale).
