The Shortened Inventory of Problems Alcohol and Drugs is a 15-item instrument adapted by Blanchard et al from Drinker Inventory of Consequences developed by Miller et al (1995).
Abstract: The Short Inventory of Problems Alcohol and Drugs is a fifteen item instrument developed by Blanchard et al. The SIP-AD was adapted by Blanchard et al from an instrument developed by Miller et al in 1995, the Drinker Inventory of Consequences. This original instrument used two formats to establish drink consequences. One format establishes whether consequences ever happened to respondents. The other format measures frequency of occurrence of the consequences. The questionnaire used in Wave 19 corresponds to the format measuring if respondents ever experienced consequences from alcohol and drug use. The original format was coded as follows: 1=Yes, 2=No, 3=Does not apply to me, 4=I prefer not to answer. These values were re-coded into new variables as 0 = No and 1 = Yes. The original value “Does not apply to me” was added to the No in the recoded variable. The value “I prefer not to answer” was re-coded as missing. Two summary variables were created, a total score and a mean of all fifteen items. The scored variables, total scores and 15-item mean, summarize consequences of alcohol and drug use. Distributions for both variables reflect a low level of reported consequences.
