Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery – Revised
Abstract: The Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery - Revised (WJ-R) is a commonly used measure of children's achievement measuring various aspects of scholastic ability. The Fast Track Project uses three subtests from the battery: (1) Calculation: this subtest measures the child's skill in performing mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The calculations are presented in a traditional problem format in a separate response booklet. The items are arranged in order of difficulty, with the easiest items presented first and the most difficult items presented last. There are a total of 58 items in the Calculation subtest. (2) Letter-Word identification: the first 5 items of this subtest involve symbolic learning, or the ability to match a pictorial representation of a word with an actual picture of the object. The remaining 52 items (total = 57) assess the child's reading skills in identifying isolated letters and words that are presented in large type on the subject's side of the test book. The items are arranged in order of difficulty, with the easiest items presented first and the most difficult items last. (3) Passage Comprehension: The Passage Comprehension test consists of 43 items, however the Fast Track project only administers 38 of these items (the first 5 are assumed to be answered correctly). For items #6 through #43, the child reads a short passage and identifies a missing key word. The child is supposed to select the word that would be appropriate given the context of the passage. As with the other subtests of this measure, items are arranged in order of increasing difficulty. For each of the three subtests, a summary score was computed which was simply the sum of all of the items for the particular subtest. In computing the summary scores for the Passage Comprehension subtest, the first five items (which were not administered by the Fast Track project) were assumed to have been answered correctly so +5 was added to the summary score for this subtest. It is recommended to use the total scores (summary scores) for each subtest, given the commonly accepted scoring procedures for Woodcock-Johnson subtests.
